Instrument Collimation Report1Seiler service calibrates your optical instrument at least once a year- right? Calibrations are a good practice but instrument collimations should also be done regularly as well and reporting them for historical purposes is available. Using a custom survey XML Style sheet (XSL), users can generate a report of all collimations performed via the data collector in a particular job. This report presents the instrument collimation details that have been recorded in the job file. It will present each unique set of collimation details so that, if the instrument collimation has been adjusted during the course of the job, the collimation details before and after the adjustment will be reported. Similarly, if different instruments have been used in a job then the collimation details for each instrument will be reported.

Custom XML style sheets (XSL) may be used to generate reports directly on a data collector or a user can use the style sheets in the ASCII file generator utility or the Job report generator in Trimble Business Center on a laptop or desktop PC.

Step 1: Download the Instrument Collimation Report XSL style sheet from the Trimble website. The downloaded zip file contains a jpg picture of what the report looks like and the actual XSL style sheet.

Step 2: Save XSL

  • Save to the Trimble Data/System File folder on your Trimble Access data collector
  • Save to the Trimble Data Folder on your Survey Controller data collector
  • Save to a local drive location on your computer if using ASCII file generator or Job report generator

Step 3: Perform the Instrument collimation and apply

In Trimble Access > General Survey, select Instrument > Adjust 

Note Instrument > Adjust is not available during a survey. End the current setup via Measure > End conventional survey before attempting to perform an instrument adjustment.

Perform HA VA Collimation and Horizontal tilt axis test

Set up the instrument on a stable surface and follow the prompts to complete the test. Current collimation values are displayed in each test (Horizontal collimation/Vertical collimation and Horizontal tilt axis). To take a measurement, aim at the target. Take the first measurement, turn the instrument away, and then re-aim. Take the second measurement. When turning the instrument away from the target, turn it away in different directions each time to insure good sightings.

Note – Do not use Autolock during Collimation or Horizontal tilt axis tests.

Test the instrument as follows:

  • For both collimation tests – Instrument should be at least 100 m (~328 ft) from the target.
  • HA VA collimation – should be on a horizontal plane- target should be less than 5° higher or lower than the instrument
  • HZ Tilt test – target should be at least 14° above or below the horizontal plane.

You must take a minimum of one observation on each face. Seiler recommends three or more.

Final collimation values must be within 0.02 gon (= 0°01’05”) of standard values. If not, adjust the instrument mechanically. Send to a Seiler Service department.

Step 4: Generate the collimation report on the data collector

    1. From the main General Survey menu select Jobs – Import / Export – Export custom format
    2. Set the file format to Instrument Collimation Report
    3. Fill in a report File name, select the proper folder and tap Accept
    4. Message will appear Transfer complete.  Tap OK
    5. If the “View created file was checked, the report will pop up for viewing
    6. An HTM report with all collimations for this job will be generated in the specified folder and may be downloaded via Mobile device center to a computer or via AccessSync with a SW valid warranty.

Note: The various Adjustment tests may also be performed via the onboard face 2 display of S-series instruments that have a face 2 display. The results from this process of testing will not be reported as part of this XSL style sheet report as they are not stored in any job file.
