Some people like touch screens and some don’t…most of the functions on a TSC2 running Access or Survey Controller can be done from the keyboard using the multi directional navigation key….but sometimes your screen may get a little “touchy” or more like “untouchy” and some functions you have to touch the screen to make them work…right?
Like in stakeout when you want to add points…you have to hit the softkey at the bottom of the screen….if your touch screen is not working you are done staking….
Not so!
If you use these keyboard shortcuts compiled by Holly Urbain of our Wisconsin office (thanks Holly!) you will still be in business…..

Key Stroke Shortcut Tips for Trimble Access
Tap a letter to open that item- Example TAP “J” from General Survey menu and the JOBS menu will open (they are sometimes underlined, sometimes not)
CTRL + W = brings up a list of all windows available in General Survey, same as status bar Switch to button
CTRL + A = brings up your list of Favorite pages, same as status bar Favorite button
CTRL + 1 thru 4 is the same a tapping the corresponding hot key buttons at the bottom of the page
example- on the MAP CTRL + 1 = ZOOM IN CRTL + 2 = ZOOM OUT etc
On the Map screen, Tap the SHIFT KEY on the keyboard to get the second page list of Hot Keys, just like the little up arrow next to Measure
CRTL + E = Menu, the brings up another active window but leaves your current activity running
CTRL + B = TSC2 Battery status
CTRL + D = displays the size of the file on the top bar next to the project name
CTRL + Q = Quits the Module user is in and returns to Trimble Access menu
IN GENERAL SURVEY
“Trimble Symbol” key, brings up the running Trimble Access Module list
CTRL + M = MAP screen
CTRL + R = Review Current Job
When Hooked to an S6
CTRL + G = brings up the Target Heights
CTRL + I = brings up the Instrument Functions screen
CTRL + I then any Geodimeter Program Number, brings up that activity in TA, Example CRTL + I 29 takes the user to Stakeout Road
Double clicking on an empty area of the map clears the current selection
CTRL + K = Check Backsight
CTRL + N = Key in –> Note
Thank you soooo much, my touch screen stopped working after I replaced the screen protector. I am tempted to do a Hard Reset but there is no backup software on it and I don’t want to lose a day of work in case something goes wrong. Just learning the Ctrl + 1,2,3,4 function helps me greatly.
Thank you! The touchscreen went completely out on my tsc2. It’s been a couple weeks and our Trimble dealer hasn’t returned our calls. It was very frustrating trying to state out points and not being able to use the map or the turn to function on stake out.
Nice tips! Does anyone know how to take a screenshot of the TSC3? I accidentally did it once, but has no idea how :). Also, where can I find a complete list of the key-shortcuts? I don’t think I’ve seen it in the user guide.
Thanks! The screen on my TSC3 went out today, and I figured out some of these by trial in error, but I couldn’t figure out the hot keys or how to change the target without using the touch screen.
I prefer to use the screen as little as possible, so once the screen is fixed I’ll probably keep using the keystrokes instead of the screen.
Btw, Tom, I was just googling to find the answer to this problem and I recognized your name on the article from my first surveying experience at Govero. How random is that?!

One more that I discovered for you:
Ctrl + space checks and unchecks boxes/fields.
Our Trimble S3 Total station gone mad, when it was winter and we had some drops on the screen from the rain, it started to go crazy – hitting the measure button without stopping. then after some time it started to work correctly again, now its summer and when its too hot, suddenly the device starts to measure points automatically again, its like someone pressing on the screen without stopping, i wonder if thats the screen protector plastic or some other bug…i must tell you that we use the device very carefully, and when it starts to rain we cover it immediately. is it possible if the screen protector is glued to the touch screen so close it can cause problems? like pushing on the screen by itself?
Hello Ben,
To confirm you are referring to your “Trimble S3” as your TSC3 data collector. A defective screen will show errors when it gets wet. As you stated “the screen has gone mad” is one of the first signs of a defective screen/touch screen that needs replaced. It is possible, regardless of age, this issue could be covered under a warranty. Contact our Service Department and they can help you further. Toll Free: 877-330-6303 or email them at: [email protected].
