New Trimble MGIS Compatibilty List June 2014, Juno 5 Enhanced and Yuma 2 Enhanced released
Both the Juno 5 Enhanced and Yuma 2 Enhanced now have 1 to 2 meter horizontal Real-time Accuracy with Integrated SBAS. SBAS is primarily a 1 to 5 horizontal meter correction.
In North America the Integrated SBAS signal that is used by the FAA is called “WAAS”. It stands for “Wide Area Augmentation System”. It is used to give a correction to GPS receivers in Real-time.
It has been used in the Mapping world for over a decade. Trimble TerraSync, Esri ArcPad and ArcGIS Mobile can receive this Real-time SBAS correction in the field. This helps to improve the uncorrected position that all GPS units receive. See more information about SBAS/WAAS toward the bottom off this blog posting.

Trimble MGIS Compatibility List:
Trimble MGIS Compatibility List June 2014
- Differential Correction with TerraSync and GPS Pathfinder Office is still 2-4 meters as it was with the original Juno 5 and Yuma 2.
- Differential Correction or SBAS is currently not available with Trimble Positions as version 10.1 or 10.2 Trimble Positions are not compatible with the Juno 5 Enhanced or Yuma 2 Enhanced.

What is SBAS?
A satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS) is a system that supports wide-area or regional augmentation through the use of additional satellite-broadcast messages. Such systems are commonly composed of multiple ground stations, located at accurately-surveyed points. The ground stations take measurements of one or more of the GNSS satellites, the satellite signals, or other environmental factors which may impact the signal received by the users. Using these measurements, information messages are created and sent to one or more satellites for broadcast to the end users. *credit to: Institute of Communications and Navigation
Keep in mind that this Real-time correction does have its limitations:
- There are 3 Geostationary satellites that offer this SBAS/WAAS Real-time correction to North America. “Geostationary” being the key word.
- These 3 satellites do not orbit the earth like the traditional GPS satellites do that give us our Uncorrected position.
- They stay stationary to follow the orbit of the earth to broadcast their correction to North America.
- They are to the South and South Western orientation of North America so that they can broadcast the correction upon North America.
- If you are trying to acquire the SBAS/WAAS correction then you need a good line of sight to 1 of these 3 SBAS/WAAS Geostationary satellites.
- Areas that would be difficult to obtain the SBAS/WAAS correction would be underneath Trees, in a vehicle, on the North side of any vertical obstruction (Poles, Water towers, Hills, River valleys, Mountains etc). If your GPS antenna cannot see the Southern Sky it will not receive the SBAS 1 to 5 meter horizontal correction.
